How to update your printcap file

In order to update your printcap file so that printing at your local Linux PC conforms with the printer name conventions at the HP, you may (as superuser)
  1. download
    this printcap-template for lpr, or
    this printcap-template for lprng
  2. move it to /etc/printcap (or merge it with an existing one if you've got local printers)
  3. chown root.root /etc/printcap
  4. download
    make-spool-dir.lpr or
    make-spool-dir.lprng
    to make your spool directories
  5. and run it (e.g. "bash make-spool-dir*").
